Summer internship: Q&A with Rani Mahassen

n Summer 2023, Arcus hosted a five-week internship for two university students who are members of The Sutton Trust’s alumni community.

Rani Mahassen speaks to us about his experience.

How did you hear about the internship opportunity?

I heard about the opportunity via The Sutton Trust’s Alumni platform.

How have you found your experience at Arcus?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience interning at Arcus.

I was fortunate to have gained deep exposure to digital infrastructure and had the opportunity to learn extensively about private equity investing in this field.

What truly made this experience stand out was the incredible support and guidance from the Arcus team. Everyone was not only approachable but also eager to share their knowledge and help in any way possible. This supportive atmosphere fostered a conducive learning environment, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally.

It was an experience I am grateful for.

What was the most significant thing you learned over your internship?

The most significant skills learned over my internship are financial modelling and business analysis. At first, it took me hours to even form an initial opinion on a company and draft a report. However, with the support and guidance of my colleagues, I gradually refined my approach, enabling me to create comprehensive reports that encapsulated all essential details with well-informed investment opinions.

Additionally, the internship has equipped me with a strong foundational knowledge of financial modelling. This alongside my ability to analyse corporations provides me with the fundamental grounding needed for financial analysis in my career.

Are there any other growth areas you’re interested in?

A growing industry that I would like to explore further is the expansion of rural digital infrastructure solutions.

The evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and its impact on data centers and rural FTTH presents significant opportunities. Reading Arcus’ reports has given me a newfound appreciation for this sector, especially in targeting underserved regions and AI’s influence on global digital infrastructure.

I am excited to witness the promising prospects in rural digital infrastructure and its intersection with AI. As a value-add infrastructure fund, I can see Arcus working heavily in this sector and am excited to see the growth!

What are you looking to do next?

Having completed my internship at Arcus, I am now confident in my desire to pursue a career in the financial industry. The technical expertise I gained during my time at Arcus, coupled with my developed soft skills, will ensure that I can put my best foot forward in my next career venture, and add value from day one.

Throughout my experience, I have developed a genuine appreciation for the field of infrastructure. Moving forward, I am eager to explore opportunities that align with this field and delve deeper into this subsector.

Thank you, Arcus, for this experience!
